The weather is a staple of British conversation, but it's also something that frequently comes up when planning a wedding - what happens if it rains on the day? In truth it's always hard to say, as breaks in the weather can be utilised, as well as potential indoor spaces at a venue. But what if it rains all day, and your venue is a big marquee in the garden?
Jono & Suzy had already had their legal ceremony before their 'wedding day', so this was more of a wedding celebration in the Surrey countryside at Jono's parent's house near South Godstone. As they own quite a bit of land, they decided to make good use of it and hire a huge marquee, which would be the location for the wedding breakfast and dancefloor/evening activities. As it turned out, it would also play host to the ceremony as well.
Having discussed timings with Jono & Suzy in the lead up to the day, Suzy wanted a bit of bridal prep photographed at the beginning of the coverage. As she was getting ready in a hotel in nearby Felbridge, we made this work, and I arrived in good time to get some lovely photos of the details, and some of Suzy having her makeup done before a few bridal and group portraits with her mum and bridesmaids.
Back at Jono's Parent's house, everyone was already assembled inside the marquee out of the rain, and it wasn't long before the girls arrived and the ceremony began, with a couple of readings and even a musical interlude from one of the groomsmen! One great thing about it not being a legal ceremony is you can plan something more personalised.
With the rain still falling, sadly we had to forgo the big group photo of everyone, as there just wasn't space in the marquee, but we still managed all the smaller family ones, and even a pretty epic confetti throw with everyone gathered in a circle around the happy couple. Weddings like this are all about problem solving for photographers, and minimising any compromises for the couple.
After the meal there were a total of 8 speeches, which is probably a record for me not soon to be broken, but they all added to the day and many drew some great reactions from the audience, and some great photos!
The evening guests were soon arriving, and it wasn't long before it was time to cut the cake and for Jono & Suzy to have their first dance, with their family and friends soon joining them on the dancefloor. This was a lovely day made all the more special by those personalised touches throughout. Jono & Suzy really were a testament to the notion that, even if the weather is bad, you can still have an awesome wedding.
